REPRESENTATIVE PROJECT EXPERIENCE PARTIAL ROOF REPLACEMENTPurdue University Civil Engineering BuildingWest Lafayette, Indiana
In 2011, the etica group was retained by Purdue University to provide professional Roof Consulting Services for the design of the removal and replacement of various roof areas on the Civil Engineering Building on the West Lafayette Campus. This project involved the design and bidding for removal of the existing ballasted EPDM roof systems and the installation of the new Modified Bitumen roof systems. As part of the design, the etica group addressed the lack of drainage and the fact that the current roof structure was a level non-draining surface by designing a new tapered insulation system to improve the drainage for most of the roof areas that were to be replaced. On one area of the roof a cost-effective Modified Bitumen roof system was designed to contain water while covered under warranty. We also addressed fall protection issues within our design which included the need to evaluate the existing roof structure to design the proper attachment of new fall protection posts to meet the OSHA requirements of 5,000 ft-lbs of torque.
ROOF, GUTTER, & DOWNSPOUT REPLACEMENTPurdue University Haas Hall West Lafayette, Indiana
Since the Purdue Architect’s Office wanted to retain the original building's architecture and appearance, the new roof system was designed to match the original clay tile roof. An additional layer of wood nailers, sheathing, and ridgid insulation were installed over the existing wood structure when the asphalt shingles were installed and the etica group was required to evaluate the existing structure to ensure that it could safely support the weight of the new clay tile roof system. etica also sized the new copper gutters that had to match the original copper gutters. The original flat locked copper metal roof had to be replaced as well but because of cost the etica group recommended using a copper foil faced modified bitumen membrane. This roof system resembles a copper metal roof and will age similar to copper over it's lifetime.

MASONRY REPAIRMemorial Gymnasium Boiler HouseKokomo, Indiana
Kokomo-Center Consolidated Township School Corporation had been experiencing masonry issues on the chimney stack at Memorial Gymnasium Boiler House for a number of years. Spalling brick was occurring on the upper portion of the chimney and was becoming a safety issue. The lower portion of the chimney needed to be tuck-pointed. Consequently, the Kokomo-Center Township School Consolidation contracted the etica group to evaluate and provide recommendations to address these issues. the etica group found that Kokomo-Center Consolidated Township School Corporation had previously replaced the original heating boilers with gas efficient boilers. This allowed the School Corporation to lower the height of the existing chimney and to tuck-point the lower portion which reduced the cost of the project.
