Renovation of Carmel Fire Department Station 42 and 46
Firefighter’s work conditions and schedules create demands many of us don’t experience or think about. Long shifts with interrupted sleep due to calls can result in a variety of health problems. Updating traditional bunk room sleep quarters to individual rooms can have enormous benefits for firefighter health and wellbeing.

What was the need?
Etica Group worked with Carmel Fire Department and CTI Construction to renovate Stations 42 and 46 to update the existing sleeping quarters from shared bunk rooms to individual rooms, adding unisex restrooms, a mother’s room and an updated laundry. If funding allows, the renovation will include dedicated decontamination facilities within each station.
What was our solution?
With new individual bunk rooms, only the firefighter units being dispatched are alerted. The bunkroom design features custom millwork with underbed storage drawers for bedding and headboards with shelving to maximize storage within a small footprint.
As designed, an existing laundry at each station will be converted to include decontamination equipment including extractors to help firefighters better remove carcinogens after calls.
