Firefighters previously shared bunk rooms above the apparatus bay. By sleeping, firefighters could risk continuing to be exposed to the carcinogenic materials more frequently found in unprotected areas. The conventional firefighters sleeping quarters also had limited privacy for male and female employees.
In order to improve safety and quality of life, 2,000 SF of under-utilized space in an addition was transformed into thirteen private bunkrooms. Each room received special attention to create acoustic separation permitting individual sleeping patterns. The area also included upgrades to the alerting system so each room could receive specific alarms for each responding apparatus.
The bunk rooms were designed and equipped with extended beds, desk, and small storage stand giving each firefighter some personal space. A single restroom, laundry area, and storage were added to support the improvements.
The project was well managed on the anticipated time schedule and within budget.
